One person was feared drowned while swimming with a group of friends at Aksa Beach in Malad area of Mumbai, civic officials said on Wednesday, adding that rescue operations were underway.

The officials said that the tragic incident was reported at Aksa Beach in Malad (West) on Wednesday evening, where one person went missing in the sea while swimming.


According to officials, the incident occurred near INS Hamla Gate, opposite JJ Nursing Home.



The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the alert at around 5:15 pm.

As per preliminary information, four people had gone into the water for a swim. Three managed to return safely, but one person is still missing and is feared to have drowned, the officials said.

"A search and rescue operation was quickly launched by the Fire Brigade. The police and 108 ambulance service also reached the spot to assist in the emergency response. Efforts are ongoing to trace the missing person," said an official.

Meanwhile, in an another incident, a portion of a the first floor of a ground-plus-one residential structure collapsed in Byculla area on Wednesday afternoon. The incident was reported from Fanuswala Building on Sakhali Street in Madanpura.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade, which was reported about the mishap at 12.49 pm, has called it a Level-I emergency. 

According to information provided by the fire brigade, a portion of the structure caved in. Seven people have suffered injuries in the incident.

After receiving the call, the fire brigade mobilised personnel to the site at 1 pm. Local police and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) ward staff have also been deployed in the area.

According of the latest update received at 2.21 pm, the site has been secured and authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and assess the structural integrity of the remaining portion of the building.

Two people, Gulam Rasool (24) and Mohammad Sayyad (59) have been admitted in Nair Hospital. Their condition is said to be stable. 

The other five injured were given treatment at Bhatia Hospital's outpatient department and discharged. They have been identified as Arif (29), Sattar (35), Mohmmad (35), Samsul (29), and Cathrine (45).
