A moment of anger and a sharp exchange of words ended a long-standing friendship in Worli, Mumbai, with tragic consequences. A 43-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his close friend after confronting him for assaulting an elderly person. Mumbai Police have arrested the accused, a labourer with a prior criminal history, and booked him for murder.
The incident occurred late on the night of January 10 near an electric repair workshop at Worli Naka, a normally busy locality that fell silent after the brutal assault.
The complainant, Pravin Ramesh Kadam (34), a housekeeping worker from Premnagar, Worli, told police that both the accused and the victim were his acquaintances and had shared a close bond for several years.
The victim, Pramod Ram Gupta, and the accused, Nilesh Kalidas Sadke (40), were reportedly good friends who often spent time together in the area.
According to investigators, trouble began when Gupta was allegedly seen assaulting an elderly man in the neighbourhood late on the night of the murder.
Alarmed by the scene, Sadke intervened and questioned Gupta over his behaviour. Instead of backing down, Gupta allegedly reacted angrily and snapped at his friend, reportedly saying, “What is it to you?” Police believe this aggressive response enraged the accused, triggering a sudden and violent outburst.
A police officer said, “The argument escalated rapidly. What began as a verbal confrontation turned into a physical assault within minutes.”
Investigators said the accused allegedly dragged Gupta into an open area inside the electric repair workshop and launched a brutal attack. Using only his hands and feet, Sadke reportedly punched and kicked Gupta repeatedly, targeting his chest and upper body. The sustained assault left Gupta severely injured, and he collapsed on the spot.
Local residents rushed the injured man to Nair Hospital, but doctors declared him dead during treatment.
The Worli Police were alerted soon after and they registered a murder case based on Kadam’s complaint. A swift investigation led to the arrest of Sadke with the help of the detection staff.
Accused has seven cases registered against him, say Worli Police
During background checks, officers found that the accused has a criminal history, with seven previous cases registered against him, including theft-related offences. The police said that the accused had earlier faced preventive action and was out on bail at the time of the incident.
“Prima facie, the murder appears to have been committed in a fit of rage. The accused and the victim were close friends, which makes the incident particularly tragic,” a senior police officer added.
Meanwhile, the victim’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Police are also separately probing the initial assault on the elderly man that triggered the confrontation. Furthermore, the statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded, and CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being scanned to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Further investigation is underway.
