In a major reshuffle, the Mumbai Police has transferred 28 Senior Police Inspectors (SPIs) from stations including Sakinaka, Kandivli, Bandra, Byculla, Sion, Goregaon, Trombay, Worli, Oshiwara, and others, while promoting about 100 Police Inspectors to SPI rank. The shake-up follows the August 7 promotion of 156 SPIs to Assistant Police Commissioner, impacting nearly 80 per cent of Senior Inspectors in 94 police stations and 102 traffic units.
While the movement has been termed a “routine transfer and promotion process” by Mumbai Police, sources suggest that the exercise has been carried out keeping in mind the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.
According to the police sources, as per an administrative order issued by the Home Department on August 7, around 156 Senior Police Inspectors (SPIs) from across Mumbai and Maharashtra were promoted to the rank of Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP). Many of these officers were already serving as SPIs in police stations in Mumbai and nearby areas. Interestingly, some officers who had been promoted to ACP earlier had declined the higher post, preferring to continue as Senior Inspectors.
Following the latest promotions, these ACPs have now been posted across various regions and departments to shoulder new responsibilities. However, the upgradation of SPIs to ACPs created vacancies in over 40 per cent of police stations in Mumbai city.
To fill these posts, on August 8, the Home Department issued another reshuffle order, transferring about 28 SPIs, including Sakinaka, Kandivli, Bandra, VB Nagar, Byculla, Sion, MHB Kurla, Navghar, Goregaon, Trombay, Wadala TT, Dindoshi, Worli, Airport RCP, RAK Marg, Oshiwara, Pydhonie, Antop Hill, Kalachowki, and Pant Nagar police stations.
According to the police sources, most of them had earlier served in multiple police stations and were moved on the Election Commission’s instructions during the Assembly polls. After the elections, they were reinstated as SPIs in different stations again.
On the same day, around 100 police inspectors from police stations and other units were promoted to the rank of SPI and appointed to vacant posts.
Overall, the reshuffle impacted about 80 per cent of the senior inspectors in 94 police stations and 102 traffic police stations across Mumbai.
