In a big boost for Mumbai’s railway projects, the Union Ministry of Railways has made the biggest allocation ever of Rs 1777 crore towards the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). An equal amount will be provided by the Maharashtra government, taking the total to Rs 3554 crore.
“The allocation of Rs 1777 crore marks an impressive 125 per cent increase over the previous year’s budget grant of Rs 789 crore to enhance suburban rail services in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” said a spokesperson of the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC).
Of this, Rs 100 crore will go towards MUTP Phase II, Rs 800 crore towards Phase III and R877 crore to Phase III A.
Chairman and Managing Director of MRVC, Vilas Wadekar said, “With this robust financial backing, key MUTP projects, including new corridors, station upgrades, and improved rail infrastructure, are progressing well, bringing Mumbai’s commuters closer to a faster, safer, and more efficient suburban railway network.”
