Mumbai rain crosses July’s average in just a few days

In a new record, the total amount of rain the city received over the last weekend has crossed the average of July. Even the downpour recorded till Tuesday morning is 85 per cent of the season’s total average rain.


According to climatological data, July gets 840.7 mm of rainfall, but this time it has registered more than 958.4 mm of rain so far. The heavy to very heavy spells of rain that lashed the city during the weekend has crossed the average of entire July. “Based on climatological data of 1981 to 2010, Mumbai normally receives 840.7 mm rain in July,” said a scientist of the Indian Meteorological Department, Mumbai.



As per data recorded by the Santacruz observatory, the city received 961.4 mm of rainfall till June 30 and an additional 958.4 mm of rainfall in July, which makes a total of 1,919.8 mm rainfall till 8.30 am on Tuesday. The city usually receives an average of 493 mm of rainfall in June, but this time it is almost double the amount.

The city recorded over 200 mm of rain on Friday and Sunday. The average rainfall recorded in the four months of monsoon is 2,260.4 mm, but this time the city has already received 1,919.8 mm, which is 85 per cent of the total rainfall. Last year the Santacruz observatory had recorded 1,642 mm of rainfall till the same day. In 2019, the city recorded a total of 1,440 mm of rainfall till July 20.
