The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-run Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra state government for the collapse of civic infrastructure in the first torrential rain of the monsoon season. The party also highlighted that the BMC, state and the Centre, all the three levels of government, are ruled by BJP.

Speaking on the waterlogging caused by the first showers, AAP's Mumbai President Preeti Sharma Menon said the monsoon is a permanent, annual feature of the city’s climate. Despite this, she alleged that the BMC failed to carry out adequate pre- monsoon preparations.

“Monsoons are a permanent and recurring annual feature of our climate. Despite that the BMC hasn’t been able to execute pre-monsoon preparations. This is nothing but ineffectiveness, corruption and monumental incompetence. Even areas which were never inundated earlier, have been flooded this time round. Roads have caved in, the railway services are shut in several parts and even the newly inaugurated metro stations have only been inaugurated recently," she said.

She also stated that the BJP has been ruling the BMC through "proxy" for the past three years.

"This is the BJP’s callous approach to the lives of Mumbaikars. The BMC under the BJP is rotten to the core and exemplifies ineptitude in governance. The BJP is only presiding over organised plunder of Mumbai and is hollowing out the city. The BJP is an anti-Mumbai party and is unfit to rule in Mumbai. We appeal to Mumbaikars to uproot the BJP from Mumbai, in the upcoming elections,” she added.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated on Monday that the southwest monsoon has made its arrival in Mumbai. This is the earliest arrival of rains in the country in the past 75 years, with Mumbai experiencing heavy showers a fortnight before the anticipated date.

With local train delays and severe road congestion already troubling commuters, the situation worsened after a section of the newly launched Mumbai Metro Line-3 was temporarily suspended. According to officials, Metro Line-3 will not be operational between Worli and Acharya Atre Chowk until further notice.

Visuals circulating on social media show significant waterlogging at Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, prompting authorities to halt train services on this stretch as a safety measure. However, services between Aarey JVLR and Worli are continuing to run smoothly.
