Heavy rainfall in Mumbai: Malvani tops with 340 mm as civic body ramps up response

Several parts of Mumbai and its suburbs recorded heavy rainfall in the last 24 hours with Malvani reporting 340 mm Parel 334 mm Colaba 248 mm and Santacruz 225 mm according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation BMCIn view of intense rainfall activity the BMC said its emergency response system is fully operational with more than 7000 officers and staff deployed across the city to manage waterlogging and related issuesThe civic body stated that continuous rainfall led to waterlogging in lowlying areas however dewatering pumps stormwater pumping stations and flood control systems have been activated ensuring rapid drainage of accumulated water Traffic movement across most parts of the city remained largely smooth officials saidThe BMCrsquos Disaster Management Department is closely monitoring vulnerable locations including lowlying areas railway stations major roads bridges and coastal zones Control room teams engineers and field staff are working round the clock to address citizen complaintsCommissioner reviews situation at control roomFollowing heavy rainfall during the night of June 23 and early morning of June 24 Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide visited the BMC emergency control room at 430 am on Wednesday to review the situation and take stock of preparedness measuresShe urged citizens to follow advisories issued by the India Meteorological Department IMD and contact the civic control room in case of emergenciesEmergency preparedness stepped upThe civic chief said regular monitoring of drain cleaning and stormwater drainage systems is underway with additional manpower and machinery being deployed wherever required Fire brigade personnel disaster management teams and other emergency services have been placed on standby to respond to incidents such as tree falls short circuits and waterloggingGiven the likelihood of continued heavy rainfall all civic departments have been instructed to remain on alert with the situation being continuously monitoredRainfall dataBetween 8 am on Tuesday and 8 am on Wednesday Colaba recorded 248 mm of rainfall while Santacruz recorded 225 mm The seasonal rainfall for June stands at 542 mm for Colaba and 537 mm for Santacruz indicating that nearly 45 per cent and 42 per cent of the monthly rainfall respectively occurred in just the last 24 hoursThe BMC said all systems remain active on the ground with officials and staff deployed across Mumbai to monitor conditions and respond to any emergenciesWaterlogging across city and suburbsFollowing heavy overnight showers waterlogging was reported in multiple areas including Dadar TT Sion Circle Chembur Kurla Mankhurd Borivali Dahisar Kandivali Malad Goregaon and AndheriCivic authorities said complaints were promptly addressed using dewatering pumps and manpower deployment with water drained in most affected pocketsHigh tide and weather forecastThe report also noted high tide conditions with tides of 341 metres at 828 am and 335 metres at 741 pm on June 24 The forecast for Mumbai and its suburbs indicated partly cloudy skies with a high probability of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty windsLake levels and water stockMumbairsquos water supply lakes showed mixed trends with most reservoirs such as Upper Vaitarna Modak Sagar Tansa Bhatsa Vihar and Tulsi witnessing marginal declines while Middle Vaitarna recorded a slight increaseTulsi Lake received the highest rainfall at 263 mm followed by Vihar Lake at 142 mm The total useful water stock currently stands at 114863 million litres higher than 2024 levels but significantly lower than 2025 figures for the same periodIncident reportThe civic body reported 70 shortcircuit incidents and 113 cases of fallen trees or branches across the city and suburbs Seven cases of partial house or wall collapse were also recorded However no injuries or fatalities were reportedDespite the disruptions authorities confirmed that road traffic and suburban train services on both Central and Western Railway lines remained largely unaffected and continued to operate smoothly as of the morning update on June 24The BMCrsquos disaster management teams remain on alert with continuous monitoring and response measures in place across the city
