Mumbai rains: IMD issues heavy rainfall alert for Maharashtra ghat, Goa and Konkan regions

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, has issued alerts for Goa, Konkan, and the Ghats of Maharashtra, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 40 km/h. Mumbai saw moderate rainfall in the past 24 hours, raising drainage concerns in low-lying areas due to tidal rise and ongoing showers.

The Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, has issued a weather alert for Goa and the Konkan region. While addressing the alarming weather conditions around Maharashtra. The weather prediction agency has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places of the Konkan and Goa regions.

Amid the lashing monsoon in the whole of Maharashtra, the IMD has clearly predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Ghats area of South Madhya Maharashtra. 




While informing about the alarming weather conditions, the Regional Meteorological Centre, Mumbai, on the social media platform X, said, “Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Konkan-Goa. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places over the Ghats area of South Madhya Maharashtra.”

During the early hours of Tuesday, the regional meteorological centre, Mumbai, also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rain. Adding to it, the weather agency also predicted gusty wind speeds reaching up to 30 to 40 km/h. 

The post highlighted that there are high chances of heavy rainfall and strong winds at isolated places over the Ghats area of North Madhya Maharashtra.

Adding to this, the RMC, Mumbai, also posted, “Thunderstorms accompanied with lightning and heavy to very heavy rain with gusty wind speed reaching 30 to 40 km/h are very likely to occur at isolated places over the Ghats area of North Madhya Maharashtra.”

Mumbai, in terms of rainfall over the past 24 hours, recorded an average of 13 mm. As per the data received by the BMC, the Eastern Suburbs received 11 mm, while the Western Suburbs recorded 8 mm. The rainfall count indicated scattered but moderate showers across Mumbai. However, the combination of tidal rise and continued rain may affect drainage in vulnerable areas.

As per the BMC, Mumbai, within the last 24 hours, has received moderate rainfall, with Colaba recording 5.8 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, bringing the seasonal total to 559.4 mm. This is 28.23 per cent of the average annual rainfall of 1,981.4 mm.

Moreover, it has also been highlighted by BMC that Santacruz recorded 6.8 mm, with a cumulative total of 499.2 mm, which is 22.05 per cent of the average annual rainfall of 2,265.7 mm.

From Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s automated rain gauge data, the financial capital of India has received 13.32 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, totalling 502.04 mm for the season, which is 23.66 per cent of the average rainfall.
