IMD warns of heavy rains in parts of Maharashtra from September 26 to 30, issues orange alert for Mumbai

According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area is currently located over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, and it is expected to strengthen into a depression within the next 12 hours. This system is likely to move westward and cross the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of  September 27

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a increase in rainfall activity over Maharashtra between September 26 and 30, 2025 due to an active weather system in the Bay of Bengal.

An orange alert is issued for Mumbai, predicting heavy rains in the city.


On Thursday, the IMD had predicted an another round of heavy rains in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts of Maharashtra from September 27. 



The weather department has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and its adjoining areas for September 27 and 28.

In a weather bulletin, the IMD predicted, "Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places."

According to the IMD, a well-marked low-pressure area is currently located over the northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal, and it is expected to strengthen into a depression within the next 12 hours. This system is likely to move westward and cross the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast by the morning of  September 27.

It said that a trough extending from this low-pressure system to the south Maharashtra coast, passing through Telangana and North Interior Karnataka at mid-tropospheric levels, continues to affect the region.

The weather department said that the Konkan and Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra: Widespread rain with heavy to very heavy rainfall at several locations and isolated extremely heavy rainfall is expected.

In Marathwada and parts of Madhya Maharashtra fairly widespread rain with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely, it said.

"Thunderstorms, along with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph, are also expected at isolated places in Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada during this period," the IMD said.

Fishermen Warning for next 5 days- 

Warning for North Maharashtra coast: (up to 75km from the coast)

- Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40 - 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra from September 27 to 30, 2025. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 45 - 55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra from September 28 to 30. Fishermen are advised not to venture into above mentioned area during these period.

Warning for South Maharashtra–Goa coast: (up to 75 km from the coast)

- Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40 - 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph likely to prevail along and off South Maharashtra-Goa from September 26 to 30. Fishermen are advised not to venture into above mentioned area during these period.
