Mumbai on Saturday reported 21 new cases of Covid-19 and one death due to the infection. The addition of the fresh cases took the total tally of infections in the city to 358 so far from December 1, 2023, the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/search/brihanmumbai-municipal-corporation--articles" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)</a> said in a health bulletin.
One death was reported on January 6, this was the first death due to Covid-19 this year, the health bulletin said.
The bulletin said that a 52-year-old man, a resident, under the jurisdiction of M West ward of the BMC was admitted at public hospital on January 4. He was a chronic alcoholic. The patient had fever, cough, and breathlessness for 5 days. He had tested positive for Covid-19 on January 5 and his condition deteriorated leading to him passing away January 5. The cause of death is LRTI with sepsis with septic shock.
The bulletin said that the recovery count increased by 32 patients to touch the total number of recoveries to 208 since December 1, 2023.
The city now has an active caseload of 150 patients, it further said.
According to the bulletin, the testing in the city was being done as per ICMR guidelines.
It said that no <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/news/india-news/article/maharashtra-deputy-cm-ajit-pawar-demands-public-cooperation-to-deal-with-covid-19-cases-in-state-23328365" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">JN.1 variant of Covid-19</a> was detected in the city.
The bulletin said that 51 per cent of the cases are asymptomatic, symptomatic cases have mild symptoms and recover within a few days.
Meanwhile,&nbsp;India registered a daily increase of 774 Covid-19 cases, maintaining 4,187 active cases, as per the Union Health Ministry's Saturday update. Within 24 hours, one death each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat was reported.
Until December 5, everyday cases were in the double digits. However, due to cold weather and the advent of a new Covid-19 variety, JN.1, there was a revival. The biggest single-day surge of 841 instances was observed on December 31, 2023, accounting for 0.2 per cent of the peak cases in May 2021.
According to official sources, the majority (over 92 per cent of active cases) are being treated at home, indicating that the JN.1 variation has not resulted in a significant increase in new cases, hospitalisations, or fatalities
