A video of a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus operating on the highway with a broken roof has caused alarm among the public. The video, which went viral on social media, shows the bus's roof almost flying away, raising serious safety concerns. MSRTC has assured that action will be taken against those responsible for operating the bus against Standard Operating Procedures and putting public safety at risk.

MSRTC, known for having one of India's largest public transport fleets with nearly 18,000 buses, has been grappling with financial losses since the pandemic-induced lockdown and subsequent workers' strike, leading to deteriorating bus conditions.

“I have been saying this every day. The state of the corporation is very bad and only positive news are being generated, but the reality on the ground is very different. Accidents, unhygienic conditions, buses in a state of disrepair, huge potholes at all bus stations and bus depots and dilapidated buildings is what we have been witnessing,” trade union leader Shrirang Barge of ST Karmachari Congress said.

MSRTC's managing director and vice-chairman, Shekhar Channe, told mid-day that an inquiry into the incident has been initiated and those found guilty will face punishment. The incident has sparked public outrage and calls for immediate action to ensure the safety and maintenance of public transport in the region.
