The routine morning assembly in schools saw a change on Tuesday, as almost every school in the city observed a two-minute silence before starting prayers, in memory of former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who passed away on Monday.

Not only were schools and colleges holding special prayer sessions in memory of him, but many institutes have also planned events through the week to celebrate his life. &ldquo;His quotes are a book of knowledge, so we started the day with his quotes during assembly.

Students were also asked to write some lines about this great man and posters have been made and put up all over our campus,&rdquo; said Carl Laurie, principal of Christ Church School in Byculla. Some schools, like Vibgyor School in Goregaon also encouraged parents to participate in activities as a mark of respect for the former president and one of India&rsquo;s greatest scientists.

At St Mary&rsquo;s School in Mazgaon, teachers have been informed to ensure that, for the next few days, all their lectures involve Dr Kalam&rsquo;s work which could also benefit teachers. &ldquo;There&rsquo;s absolutely no field that Shri Kalam was not involved in, and we have requested teachers to introduce every subject through his works.
Be it science, history and civics, math, etc, his work will be taught to our children over the next one week,&rdquo; said Fr Jude Fernandes, principal of St Mary&rsquo;s (SSC) School. He also added that students have been asked to make charts giving out messages by Dr Kalam, and these will be displayed all over the school premises.
Some institutes also carried out candlelight vigils in memory of Dr Kalam. At Nagindas Khandwala College in Malad, students from the Bachelors in Mass Media cohort made posters as well as lit candles in his memory.
Students of H R College, Churchgate, saw a film made on Kalam&rsquo;s visit to their college in 2009. St Andrews College in Bandra also held a prayer for Dr Kalam. They will also organise discussions on him. Principal Marie Fernandes had invited him, just about 10 days back, as chief guest for their annual prize distribution function and was waiting to hear from him.
&ldquo;It was so easy to get in touch with him through the Internet. I still can&rsquo;t get over the fact that he has passed away,&rdquo; she said. The state government has decided to celebrate October 15, the birthday of Dr Kalam, as &lsquo;Vaachan Prerna Divas&rsquo; (Inspirational Reading Day).
&ldquo;The purpose is to introduce students to reading and get inspired though reading. So, we encourage all schools to celebrate this day,&rdquo; said a senior education officer.
