Four teenagers tempted death when they got behind the wheel of an SUV, sped through Powai, jumped off a 3-ft-high traffic barrier and landed 25 feet below in a densely forested area early yesterday.

Sumit Pandya (17) and Ashna Shah (16) from Bhandup, and Mulund residents Rutika Shetty (17) and Puja Deria (16) sated late night hunger pangs at a pizza outlet in Powai and were returning home in a Toyota Fortuner around 3.30 am.

Pandya was driving the SUV. On the stretch between IIT-Bombay and the Gandhinagar junction, he picked up so much speed that he lost control over the vehicle.
The SUV veered to the edge of the road, knocked down a streetlight, grazed a 3-ft-high road safety barrier, jumped right off it and dropped 25 feet below in a thicket.
The police rescued the four and took them to Hiranandani Hospital in Powai around 6 am. No one sustained any grievous injury in the accident. Only Shah suffered a fracture in the left arm.
The others were treated for minor cuts and bruises on the arms and legs, said a doctor at the hospital.
The Parksite police filed an FIR against Pandya. &ldquo;We have booked him under sections 279 (rash driving) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering the life or personal safety of others) of the IPC and sections 3/181 (driving without a valid licence) and 184 (driving dangerously or abetting to driving dangerously) of the Motor Vehicles Act,&rdquo; said Rajendra L Kulkarni, senior police inspector.
