How to prove you are the best person for the job? Show a glimpse of your ability even before you get it. Sachin Bagate, a 22-year-old aspiring police constable, did just that by nabbing a serial thief at his training institute recently. On Wednesday, the Navghar Police station arrested Chandramani More, 19, for stealing bags from the police training ground at Mulund East. He was caught red-handed, but has denied all charges against him.

Sachin Bagate, a trainee constable, has been staying and training at the Prahar Academy, in Kopri, Thane, for a year. As part of the training schedule, candidates are required to take part in several physical activities at the Hari Om ground in Mulund East. Once there, the candidates leave their bags and other belongings on one side of the ground and proceed for the training. For the last four weeks, however, bags and belongings were being consistently stolen from the spot, but the candidates chose not to complain about it to their superiors or to the police. The worth of the articles stolen was Rs 50,000.

Then, hidden some distance away, he kept a watch on his bag. A few minutes later, he saw a boy approaching his bag and checking the belongings. The boy then went a little ahead and started speaking to someone on his phone. He was telling the person at the other end that he would take the bag as soon as the coast was clear. After a few minutes, he returned to the spot where the bag was kept and was about to lift it, when Bagate pounced on him.

He has been booked under IPC Section 379 (for theft). The boy has been denying that he had been trying to steal the bag.

Bagate said, "My passion lies with the police department and I want to become a good police officer. I just used the best possible skills to get the accused nabbed." The Navghar Police are currently investigating the matter.
