In a bid to cut down on travel time, students of colleges affiliated with Mumbai university have written to the varsity authorities, requesting them to consider their residential addresses before allotting examination centres.
According to the students, if the exam centres are close to their homes, they get more time to study.
The request, which was first put forward by students of Victor Dantas Law College in Sindhudurg, in the form of a letter to the university, has received a lot of support from students of other colleges. Mumbai University has a wide jurisdiction and students from different parts of the state get admitted to its affiliated colleges. While students have little say in the admission process, they wish to choose their examination centres.
Focus on studies &ldquo;Several factors determine admission of students. Even if they prefer Mumbai colleges, seats are allotted based on the centralised system. Hence, they may have to get admitted to a college in Ratnagiri, Navi Mumbai, Thane or Palghar, against their wish. A student can manage her regular studies by travelling long distances but expecting it at the time of examinations is a bit too much,&rdquo; said a student from Sindhudurg College.
Another student from Bharati Vidyapeeth College in Kharghar, who lives in Borivli said, &ldquo;During exams, we need to give maximum time to preparations, hence travelling long distances becomes difficult. Sometimes we have to make temporary arrangements, like staying at a relative&rsquo;s place or at a hostel close to the centre, to cut down on travel time.&rdquo;
Former senate member of Mumbai University Mahadeo Jagtap said, &ldquo;Examinations are very important for students, and hence, the varsity can think about allotting exam centres as per the students&rsquo; preference.&rdquo;
Request forwarded When contacted, Dr MA Khan, registrar of Mumbai University said, &ldquo;The request has been forwarded to the examination section. However, there are certain logistic limitations. It has to be seen whether a particular college will be able to accommodate additional students, as such requests mainly come from those who study in colleges located outside Mumbai.
In such cases it will be difficult to go by the student&rsquo;s preference. We are considering the request but nothing can be said as of now.&rdquo;
