Mumbai University will hold its annual convocation ceremony on January 17, 2026. At the event, over 1.5 lakh graduates will receive degrees and 577 PhDs will be awarded, officials said on Thursday.
The convocation ceremony will be held at 10 am at the Sir Cowasji Jehangir Convocation Hall in Fort, they said.
At the ceremony, the university will handover bachelor’s and master’s degrees to students from various undergraduate and postgraduate faculties.
As many as 577 graduates from various faculties will be conferred with PhD degrees, as of December 18. Of these, 256 students are from the Faculty of Science and Technology.
Record number of PhD degrees
According to an official statement, this year marks a significant rise in research achievements at the university. A total of 577 PhD degrees will be awarded, the highest number in nearly a decade.
Faculty-wise distribution of PhD graduates will include -
- 256 from the Faculty of Science and Technology
- 144 from Commerce and Management
- 106 from Humanities
- 71 from Interdisciplinary Studies
"The number of PhD degrees had fallen sharply during the Covid-19 pandemic, reaching a low of 153 in 2021. However, it has steadily increased since then, with 367 doctorates in 2023, 428 in 2024, and 401 in 2025, before touching 577 in 2026," the official statement said.
Medals for academic excellence
During the convocation, 19 outstanding students -- 12 girls and 7 boys -- will be honoured with 21 medals, including two competition prizes, for exceptional performance in university examinations, the statement said.
The convocation will be presided over by the Governor of Maharashtra and Chancellor of Mumbai University, Acharya Devvrat. The Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India, Prof Ajay Kumar Sood, will be the chief guest and will deliver the convocation address.
Other dignitaries including Chandrakant Patil, Minister for Higher and Technical Education, Maharashtra, Indranil Naik, Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education, Prof Ravindra Kulkarni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai, Dr Ajay Bhamre, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dr Prasad Karande, Registrar will also be present at the event, the statement further said.
The event will be broadcast live on Mumbai University’s official social media platforms, including its YouTube channel, allowing students and families to participate virtually, it said.
