Several parts of Mumbai received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday night. According to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) nowcast warning issued at an interval of three hours daily, Mumbai was on green alert, with an indication of moderate rainfall in isolated places. Mumbaikars reported showers in areas of Dadar, Bandra and Goregaon in the western suburbs, as well as Ghatkopar, Chembur, and Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs. According to IMD, the eastern parts of Mumbai were more likely to experience rainfall.

A senior IMD official said, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area persists over the same region extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, tilting southward with height. Easterly/northeasterly winds set in over southern peninsular India, south and adjoining central Bay of Bengal in the lower tropospheric levels.”

In its daily bulletin issued on Thursday afternoon, IMD indicated moderate rainfall for Mumbai. However, as per the latest indications, little or no rainfall is expected in the city over the next three days. The rain has been reported in the city despite the early withdrawal of the monsoon this year. IMD announced the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from Mumbai on Friday, October 10.

This is the earliest such withdrawal since 2018, when the monsoon withdrew on October 6. This year, Mumbai recorded an early onset of the monsoon season, the first in 75 years, on May 26. While typically, the monsoon withdraws from Mumbai in the second or third week of October, the IMD had earlier indicated a delayed withdrawal of the monsoon due to western disturbances.
