Mumbai weather updates: Yellow alert for city as rains set to return

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai on Sunday and Monday (September 14 and 15), warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places in the city.

A yellow alert has also been issued for Thane district for the same days, along with an orange alert for Raigad on Sunday and Monday, and for Ratnagiri on Monday. 


Earlier this week, on Tuesday, IMD had issued a green alert for Mumbai until Friday, indicating light rainfall between September 9 and 13.

According to IMD’s daily district forecast, Mumbai remains under a green alert for Friday and Saturday, with Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri also expected to see light to moderate rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for Sindhudurg for Friday and Saturday. 

However, on Thursday, IMD upgraded Mumbai’s Saturday forecast from green to yellow.

Between June 1 and September 1, 2025, Mumbai’s Colaba observatory recorded 1700 mm of rainfall, while the Santacruz observatory logged 2618.7 mm — about 499.3 mm above its annual average.

Mercury rising

On Friday, the city recorded maximum temperatures above 32 degrees C, with low wind speeds of around 5.6 kmph, making conditions uncomfortably hot. In the 24 hours between Thursday and Friday, the island city received only 0.01 mm of rainfall, the eastern suburbs 0.08 mm, and the western suburbs none, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
