Eastern suburbs of Mumbai are lagging behind in COVID-19 vaccination, with six wards in these areas reporting the fewest number of beneficiaries. B ward, which comprises Masjid Bunder, Mohammed Ali Road, Dongri and Bhendi Bazar and has one vaccination centre, had not inoculated a single person till March.

Western suburbs have adopted the immunisation drive in a big way, shows data till March 31. H East, which covers Bandra E, Khar E and Santacruz E, is leading in vaccine delivery. India launched its vaccination programme on January 16. To reach a wider section of the public, the government has allowed people above 45 years of age to take the shots from April 1.

Mumbai currently has 111 centres of which a majority are in private hospitals and establishments. Four jumbo COVID centres, BMC hospitals and peripheral civic hospitals are vaccinating citizens for free. Over 60 hospitals have been roped in for the drive.

The HE ward, which has 4 centres including the BKC jumbo COVID centre, has so far inoculated 1,27,975 people. In B ward, the only centre has been set up at Habib Hospital that is yet to open its account.

The jumbo switch

Suresh Kakani, assistant municipal commissioner, said, “Many citizens prefer jumbo COVID centres to get inoculated and residents in eastern suburbs are going to BKC jumbo COVID centre resulting in less footfall in their nearest centres. Now, as 45-plus citizens are allowed to get the jab, we will get the real picture of vaccination and footfall at centres.”

Kakani said the BMC plans to increase the number of vaccination centres to 125. “These proposals hopefully will be cleared by the central government as soon as possible,” he said.

Up until March 31, the four jumbo centres in the city have taken care of about 25 per cent of the city’s vaccine-delivery load. While the BKC centre has immunised 1,12,568 people, the NESCO unit in Goregaon has delivered 74,802 doses. Facilities at Dahisar and Mulund have administered 60,130 and 37,902 shots respectively.
