The city witnessed unexpected rains early on Saturday morning. The rains that were accompanied by thunder and lightenening were measured at 0.4mm in Colaba and 1.7mm in Santacruz. The rains are said to have been caused due to western disturbance over Afghanistan and adjoining areas of Pakistan. This weather disturbance induced upper-air cyclonic circulation over South Pakistan moving towards Kutch and West- Rajasthan causing thunder showers.

Areas that were affected due to the western disturbances are Maharashtra, Northern Konkan, goa, North parts of Madhya- Maharashtra and parts of Aurangabad region of Maratha. Gujarat too, is said to have witnessed isolated rainfall, i.e., rainfall in one or two regions. However, more rainfall occurred in Madhya Maharashtra. The weather forecast taken on Saturday morning stated light showers are likely to take place again. &ldquo;Such kinds of disturbances are usually witnessed in winter or during the start of the summer season. Once summer sets in, such instances will cease to occur in Mumbai&rdquo;, said Ajay Kumar, Director of Weather Section, Mumbai. While the unexpected rains seems toi be a blessing in this blistering heat, the traders from APMC market revealed that sudden Hailstorm and rains have hit few parts of the state including Junnar, Nashik and Pune region as a result of which fruits such as grapes and pomegranates have been badly hit. Further, vegetable produce is also affected in some region, however the details of exact amount of loss is yet unknown. Traders said that onions are affected by the sudden hailstorm. &nbsp;"There was over 6 inch of ice sheet accumulated over onion and other fields in some region and this will have an impact on the quality of produce, especially onions," said Babaji Dhumal, an onion-potato trader at Vashi APMC.

Traders added that supplies could be hit, but the real picture of the market would be known only by Tuesday as APMCs across the state would remain shut on Monday as Mathadi workers would be agitating against the state government's decision to make changes in the State Mathadi Worker's Act 1969.
