<p>Recently, a new FOB was opened for commuters at Mulund. It seems like both the railway and municipal authorities likely overlooked the need for a roof. Can users expect a roof on this FOB?&nbsp;<br /><strong><em>Shailesh N Purohit</em></strong></p>
<h2>Garbage pile-up</h2>
<p>The accumulation of garbage, discarded materials and waste along the roadside near Pegasus Tower, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-mid-day-brings-light-to-andheris-jp-road-23580486" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Yari Road Andheri</a> west, as visible in the photograph, reflects poor civic maintenance and inadequate waste-management practices. Such unhygienic conditions not only create an eyesore but also pose serious health and safety risks to residents, pedestrians and motorists, while attracting pests and causing foul odour. The civic authorities concerned must immediately clear the accumulated waste, thoroughly clean and sanitise the area, ensure regular door-to-door waste collection and provide adequate, covered bins. Strict monitoring and penalties should be imposed for repeated illegal dumping, with periodic inspections to ensure the area remains clean and hygienic as this became regular dumping site, hence permanent solution is required.<br /><strong><em>Iqbal Gilani Mansuri</em></strong></p>
<h2>Selective hawker action</h2>
<p>Any action being taken by local authorities, be it by the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/mumbai-police-ban-gatherings-of-five-or-more-processions-and-loudspeakers-across-city-till-september-23-23648499" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">BMC or local police</a> against illegal and unauthorised hawkers or vendors on public places, sitting or on four-wheel carts should be 100 per cent against every single one; action cannot be selective. Today, across the city, we see women sitting on the footpaths to sell some wares. These women are trying to earn an honest living and needn&rsquo;t be treated harshly.&nbsp;<br /><strong><em>Kedar Aiyar</em></strong></p>
<h2>Give us our bus route back</h2>
<p>I am a resident of Akashganga Complex, Rabodi, Thane. Before the Station Area Traffic Improvement Scheme construction at Thane station, the bus would go along the Court Naka, Jambli Naka route to Thane station West. Now, it goes on the east side and it does not serve the purpose of connectivity. Please restore services along earlier route as getting a rickshaw too anytime is very difficult.<br /><strong><em>Priya Tamhane</em></strong></p>

<p>Residents of Yari Road, Andheri West are forced to navigate heaps of garbage, broken pavement, and displaced manhole covers &mdash; evidence of civic neglect. Citizens who stood for hours in scorching heat to elect representatives ask whether the government, Ward 59 corporator, and Versova MLA are honestly discharging duties when road safety and sanitation remain ignored.<br /><strong><em>Iqbal Gilani Mansuri</em></strong></p>
<h2>Road cave-in</h2>
<p>A dangerously caved portion of Yari Road, Andheri West, has become a serious hazard for pedestrians, particularly school students and parents, as well as motorists. The damaged road surface and stagnant water can lead to accidents, especially during peak school and traffic hours. BMC authorities must immediately identify the cause of the road damage, repair it with proper engineering standards, and ensure regular inspection and maintenance to prevent recurrence. The safety of citizens must not wait for an accident to happen.<br /><strong><em>Iqbal Gilani Mansuri</em></strong></p>
<h2>Responses</h2>
<p>After Mumbaikars sent in their questions and woes to mid-day last Monday, some of the authorities concerned responded. We haven&rsquo;t given up on the rest. We shall continue to hold authorities accountable for the state of the city.</p>
<h2>Caved-in manhole cover</h2>
<p><strong>Reader: Iqbal Gilani Mansuri</strong><br />BMC responds: mid-day lodged a complaint with Andheri&rsquo;s K/West ward disaster management control room regarding the issue. An official addressing the complaint said, &ldquo;We will look into the issue, and take appropriate action, and forward the complaint to the department concerned.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Footpaths encroached</h2>
<p><strong>Reader: A Majeed Motiwala</strong><br />A senior civic official told mid-day that footpaths were being cleared under Pedestrian First policy. &ldquo;Municipal Commissioner <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/bmc-chief-ashwini-bhide-inspects-mumbai-footpaths-orders-action-to-clear-pedestrian-obstructions-23645191" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Ashwini Bhide</a> has instructed all ward officials to ensure that the footpaths in the jurisdiction, once cleared, should not be reoccupied, through regular inspection. The licence department continues to conduct regular drives.&rdquo;</p>

<p><strong>Reader: Iqbal Gilani Mansuri</strong><br />BMC responds: A senior BEST official said, &ldquo;We have instructed the bus depot manager concerned who will take up the issue with the local BMC office get the surface of the footpath repaired and also cleaned up.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Endless road repair work</h2>
<p><strong>Reader: Ravi D Baliga</strong><br />Aarey responds: An official from the Aarey Milk Colony Chief Executive Officer (CEO) office said, &ldquo;We have sent a proposal to the PWD for the installation of new street lights along the 26-km road network inside Aarey Milk Colony. The installation of new lights on the stretch from Aarey Market to the Royal Palms gate will be taken up once the budget is approved.&rdquo; A BMC official said, &ldquo;At present, work across the city has been brought to a safe stage and stopped due to the monsoon. The road concentration project has a deadline of May 2027, and work will resume in October 2026.&rdquo;</p>
