The dip in temperature across the country has affected the growth and supply of tomatoes in the market. Traders at Vashi&rsquo;s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) have said that the ongoing winter season has brought down the supply of tomatoes, pushing the price from R5-7 per kg to R18-20 in the wholesale market.

At the same time, APMC is witnessing an increase in supply of green peas from northern states of India, bringing down its price from R80-90 per kg quoted during the monsoon season, to Rs 28-30 per kg. Sridhar Pawale, a vegetable trader at APMC, said, &ldquo;The cold temperature and dew slows down the growth period of tomatoes.
Usually, it takes around two months; however, when there is a dip in temperatures, the vegetable takes around four months to ripen.&rdquo; With mercury dropping to 10 degree Celsius in tomato-growing regions, including Pune, Narayangoan, Nashik and Satara, it has fluctuated the demand-supply ratio in APMC, which is expected to continue till the end of the season.

&ldquo;The wholesale market is receiving a good supply of green peas from states like Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Consumers can expect the prices to come down even further in the next few weeks. Aside from tomatoes, the prices of other vegetables are more or less stable in the market,&rdquo; informed a senior official from APMC&rsquo;s vegetable department.
