New cases in Mumbai soared to 2,510 on Wednesday, registering a seven-fold jump in daily COVID infections in just a week. The dramatic increase has pushed up the test positivity rate beyond 5, showed BMC data. Not just in the city, COVID cases have also begun rising in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which includes Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar. MMR alone saw 3,173 cases, forming a major chunk of the state’s overall figure of 3,900 infections.

COVID cases have started heading north since last week. On Wednesday, the cases reached a new high, with authorities ramping up tests to 51,843. A day earlier, the city had reported 1,377 new cases with a TPR of 4.25 per cent.
