The Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) is a 12-kilometer-long road infrastructure project that will connect Mulund and Goregaon. After Ghodbunder Road, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), and Santacruz Chembur Link Road, the GMLR is Mumbai's fourth east-west corridor. Here's all you need to know about the project.
The GMLR project spans 12.2 kilometers. BMC has suggested the construction of two tunnels beneath Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The first 4.7-kilometer tunnel will begin at Film City in Goregaon and end at Khindipada in Mulund. The tunnel's depth will vary between 20 and 160 metres.

The proposed Goregaon Mulund Link Road (GMLR) 4.7-km twin tunnels will be completed by October 2028, according to municipal commissioner I S Chahal's budget statement on Friday. PM Narendra Modi may perform the bhoomipujan of these works, which are estimated to cost Rs 6,322 crore, during his visit to open Phase 1 of the Coastal Road Project on February 19. The twin tunnels in Goregaon East are part of the critical East-West connector designed to ensure that the environment is not harmed and that large sums of money are not wasted on land acquisition, according to reports.
The project's entire cost is estimated at around 6,300 crores. It will lessen traffic congestion and shorten travel time. The current travel time between Mulund and Goregaon is 80 minutes. Once the new GMLR road is open, the travel time will be reduced to as little as 20 minutes.
The goal of GMLR is to build an east-west corridor that connects the Western Express Highway at Goregaon to the Eastern Express Highway in Mulund. Current routes from Ghodbunder Road in Thane or Powai are congested during peak hours.
Tunnels will be built using revolutionary force ventilation technology. There will be no above-ground ventilation outlets, so wildlife will not be disturbed.
The remaining 6-7 km of road will be divided into two 6-lane flyovers, one from Dindoshi Court to Film City and another at Mulund's Hedgewar Junction.
The route will begin at the Eastern Express Highway near the Mulund-Airoli junction and end near the Western Express Highway in Goregaon.
The first phase of the GMLR project includes the construction of the Nahur ROB, which is currently 80 per cent complete, with the overall work projected to be finished by May 2024. The second phase includes road widening on both the Goregaon (east) and Mulund (west) sides of the route. Phase three includes an elevated road at the intersection of G G Singh Road and the GMLR, as well as another flyover at Hedgewar Junction (Mulund West). Work orders have been issued for the tunnels' construction, which includes a 1.6-km box tunnel at Goregaon East and a 4.7-km Twin Tunnel (Goregaon East) with an October 2028 completion date.
