<p>Resident doctors at Topiwala National Medical College and BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday held a symbolic black ribbon protest against the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/shiv-sena-corporator-ramesh-mhatre-arrested-for-allegedly-assaulting-doctor-at-civic-hospital-in-kalyan-23638872" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">assault on doctors</a>, nurses and healthcare workers at KDMC Shastrinagar Hospital.</p>
<p>The protest was organised by members of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) at Nair Hospital to express solidarity with the medical staff who were attacked.</p>
<p>According to a statement issued by Nair MARD, resident doctors from clinical, para-clinical and pre-clinical departments participated in the protest by wearing black ribbons while continuing their duties.</p>
<h2>Medical services continue during protest</h2>
<p>The association said the protest was conducted peacefully and did not affect patient care or hospital operations.</p>
<p>Outpatient services, emergency care, inpatient services, operation theatres and other essential healthcare facilities continued without interruption during the demonstration.</p>
<p>The doctors said the protest was aimed at highlighting concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals while ensuring that patients did not face inconvenience.</p>
<h2>Nair MARD demands action against violence</h2>
<p>Through the symbolic protest, Nair MARD condemned violence against healthcare workers and said medical professionals should be able to perform their duties in a safe environment.</p>
<p>The association also thanked resident doctors for their participation and unity.</p>
<p>Nair MARD demanded strict legal action against those responsible for attacks on healthcare workers, improved security arrangements at hospitals and a zero-tolerance approach towards violence in healthcare institutions.</p>
<h2>Protest follows assault at KDMC hospital</h2>
<p>The protest came after doctors and medical staff at the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastrinagar Hospital were allegedly assaulted.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, doctors at Shastrinagar Hospital launched a strike, citing concerns over safety and alleging "complete lawlessness" following the incident involving <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/eknath-shinde-reprimands-shiv-sena-corporator-arrested-for-assaulting-woman-doctor-uday-samant-23638976" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre</a>.</p>
<p>The incident sparked criticism from medical organisations and renewed discussions about security arrangements at hospitals.</p>
<h2>Shiv Sena corporator arrested in assault case</h2>
<p>Police later arrested Mhatre in connection with the alleged assault on doctors and medical staff at <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/shiv-sena-corporator-booked-after-doctors-assaulted-at-kdmc-hospital-in-thane-23638789" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">KDMC Shastrinagar Hospital</a>.</p>
<p>According to officials, the case was registered at Vishnunagar Police Station in Dombivli, and Mhatre was arrested under relevant legal provisions, including Sections 132 and 121(1).</p>
<p>Police said four accused have been arrested so far in connection with the case.</p>
<p>Authorities said further investigation is underway as healthcare organisations continue to demand stronger measures to protect doctors and medical staff from workplace violence.</p>
