After initiating illegal building demolition in 99 Navi Mumbai buildings in September this year, an ongoing survey by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has found that there are over 300 illegal buildings across the satellite city.

Officials from the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) told mid-day that the figures could increase, since the survey will continue for a few more months. These buildings are spread across Airoli, Uran and Dronagiri nodes. There are 32 illegal structures in Airoli, while out of the total 300 illegal buildings, 136 are in Ghansoli.
On September 23, the Bombay High Court had issued an order, directing CIDCO and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) to demolish 99 illegal buildings in Digha.
Complying with the court&rsquo;s order, CIDCO started a demolition drive of illegal buildings in Digha from October 5 and in Airoli from November 26. Three buildings in sector-9 in Airoli were razed as they were constructed upon CIDCO land without any land title and development permission from CIDCO.
CIDCO says Yogesh Mhase, chief controller of unauthorised construction at CIDCO, said, &ldquo;Our survey is still going on. At present there are approximately 300 illegal buildings across Navi Mumbai, majority of which are under construction.
There is a possibility that more such structures are present in the city. Our survey will continue for few more months. An FIR would be registered against developers and illegal buildings would be demolished by CIDCO.&rdquo;
He further added that tenants in such illegal structures would have no option but to look for alternative modes of accommodation. &ldquo;If the law has been broken, even we cannot help,&rdquo; said Mhase. He also said that it is difficult to assess the number of families getting affected by the demolition.
Among the short listed illegal structures, some do not have permission of land allotment from CIDCO, while few do not have permission from the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to construct buildings, Mhase said.
