A 30-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday morning by the New Panvel police station for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl, who registered a case against him. Later, when two constables went to his residence, they were allegedly assaulted by stones by the accused, along with the locals.

The arrested accused has been identified as Dilip Katkare 30, based from Karanjade village in Panvel and works as a watchman with a residential society in Panvel itself. The victim is his neighbor. &ldquo;The accused used to regularly harass her on different occasion in the past and even used to drink in front of her house, along with her friends. On Tuesday, at around 7:30pm, the victim was heading back to home, when the accused came on his motorcycle and parked in-front of her blocking her way. The accused asked the victim to join him, but when she refused he caught hold her hand and sexually assaulted him,&rdquo; said MM. Kolhatkar, Assistant Police Inspector, Panvel city police station
The victim along with her father approached the police station and were in process to register a case. However, two police constables based with Panvel city police station including Mukund Solankar 26 and Yuvraj Patil 27 left to arrest the accused Katkar and investigate on the ground about the incident. &ldquo;When the two constables reached the spot and started inquiring him about the incident they were shocked to see that Katkar assaulting himself with a stone on his head. He started bleeding and screaming among the locals that he is been assaulted by the policemen. They angry crowd then came ahead and along with the accused they tore the dress of Patil and later pelted stone, where both of them have suffered injuries on body part and were admitted in a private hospital. Patil just missed a stone that hit his left eye,&rdquo; added Kolhatkar.
The Panvel city police station booked him first under 354 (assault or criminal force of woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and different section of the Protection of Children from Sexual offence Act, 2012 for sexually assaulting the minor girl. Later, as he assaulted and pelted stone on the constable he was been booked along with his five friends under sections 143, 147, 149, 353, 342, 336, 337, 427, 504 and 506 of the Indian penal code. &ldquo;We have arrested the accused Katkar on Wednesday morning, while his other five friends who accompanied him are absconding. The arrested accused Katkar was produce in court on Wednesday and is in police custody,&rdquo; added Kolharkar.
