Three people were killed when their car jumped a divider in Kharghar and rammed into an oncoming tempo on the other side of the road. The deceased were on their way back from Pune.
The incident occurred around 1.30 pm at Hiranandani bridge in Kharghar, where the three people &mdash; Neel Unnikrishnan Nair (38), Abhaya Nitin Zaveri (47) and Devanshi Nitin Zaveri (17) &mdash; were travelling in their Maruti Suzuki Alto car (MH-02-CW-3950). The trio had gone to Pune to look for a flat and was returning homes.

The accident occurred because the driver couldn&rsquo;t see the divider on the bridge, and as a result, drove over it. The car crossed over to the other side and collided head-on with an oncoming tempo truck.
Some police officers and auto rickshaw drivers witnessed the accident and hastened to help the injured passengers. The three were rushed to MGM Hospital in Kalamboli.
A doctor at the hospital confirmed that both the female passengers had died even before they reached the hospital. The driver, Nair, died a few minutes after he was brought in.
All of them had suffered severe head injuries that had resulted in internal bleeding. A doctor deemed this to be the main cause of death. The dead bodies were sent to Rural Hospital in Panvel for a post-mortem exam, and were handed over to the families late in the evening.
While Nair was a Thane resident, Abhaya and Devanshi lived in Mira Road.
Copspeak Mangesh Jagtap, assistant police inspector at Kharghar police station witnessed the accident and helped take the victims to hospital. He said, &ldquo;I was completely traumatised when the accident occurred and rushed to help the three.
Their condition was severe; we took them to the hospital in our van and an auto rickshaw. The tempo driver however managed to flee.&rdquo;
