The Mayor of Thane was in for a shock when he learnt that a corporator from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and his supporters had landed outside his office with a crate of beer yesterday.

The party men were miffed that the mayor had adjourned a general body meeting last week in order to meet representatives of the city&rsquo;s restaurant and bar association, and left a symbolic &lsquo;gift&rsquo; for him.
The demonstration was led by NCP corporator Amit Saraiya, who, along with his party workers, clamoured outside the mayor&rsquo;s office in Thane yesterday. According to the corporator, the mayor had called a general body meeting of legislators from the Thane Municipal Corporation on December 28.
Halfway through the meeting, Sanjay More, who is from the Shiv Sena, allegedly wrapped it up to meet representatives of the Restaurant and Bar Association from the city. Saraiya said, &ldquo;On December 28, we had a general body meeting, but our mayor seemed to be least interested in addressing issues related to the public.
That is why he adjourned the meeting in a hurry to meet the people from the restaurant and bar association. There were 50 subjects on our agenda for discussion, but the mayor passed all those matters in a hurry. As a mark of protest, I, along with my other party workers, gave the mayor a box of beer cans as a gift.&rdquo;
Though the mayor was not in his office in the afternoon when the group had gone there, they left him their &lsquo;present&rsquo;. One of the workers even cracked open a can on the spot. In a press conference yesterday, NCP&rsquo;s MLA from Kalwa, Jitendra Awhad also condemned the way in which the mayor had postponed the meeting.
Mayor speak The mayor, however, isn&rsquo;t in a mood to say cheers. He told mid-day, &ldquo;We will take disciplinary action against the corporator and the party workers for bringing beer on the office premises of TMC.
I have also lodged a complaint with the Naupada police station.&rdquo; Police sources said a case has been registered against 30 people, including Saraiya, under Sections 353, 143 and 147 of the IPC, along with other relevant charges.
