Mumbai police on Friday registered a case against NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and others for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duties during a protest at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan, an official confirmed, reported news agency PTI.

Awhad was forcibly removed by the police in the early hours of the day while protesting against the detention of his supporter, Nitin Deshmukh.

However, Deshmukh had reportedly been assaulted by supporters of BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar during a scuffle within the building the previous day.

According to PTI, the MLA had physically blocked a police vehicle, demanding Deshmukh's release and alleging biased action by law enforcement officials. A police official stated that Awhad sat in front of the vehicle at Vidhan Bhavan as his supporter was being taken to the police station. When he failed to move despite repeated requests, he was forcibly removed by police officers. Subsequently, a case was registered against the legislator at the Marine Drive police station for obstructing public servants in the discharge of their duty.

Meanwhile, MLA Rohit Pawar accompanied Awhad to the Azad Maidan police station to visit Nitin Deshmukh, where a heated exchange with a police officer occurred earlier in the day. Both Pawar and Awhad, along with their supporters, had visited the police station to inquire about Deshmukh.

Speaking to reporters at the Vidhan Bhavan, Pawar claimed a police officer at the Azad Maidan police station did not provide proper information and allegedly raised his voice, which led to an argument. A video circulating on social media shows Pawar shouting at a police officer, with him heard saying, "Don't raise your voice, if you are not able to speak, don't speak," during the altercation, according to PTI.

Pawar and Awhad, who had initially gone to the police station for an inquiry, later met Deshmukh at the state-run JJ Hospital, an official stated.

Moreover, in a related development, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday criticised the BJP over the clash in the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan, alleging that individuals with serious criminal records were being inducted into the party. Speaking to reporters, Raut called for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to dissolve his government and for President's rule to be imposed in the state.
