Police have arrested one supporter each of NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar following a clash inside the Maharashtra legislature complex, an official said on Friday.

The altercation between supporters took place on Thursday within the premises of Vidhan Bhavan, a day after Awhad and Padalkar were involved in a heated verbal exchange, according to news agency PTI.

Those arrested are Nitin Deshmukh, a supporter of Awhad, and Rishikesh Takle, a supporter of Padalkar. The duo was taken to the Marine Drive police station in south Mumbai, where their statements were recorded.

A case has been registered against them under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the official added, reported news agency PTI.

They will be produced before the court later in the day, he said, adding that both the accused have a criminal record.

In the wee hours of Friday, Awhad launched an aggressive sit-in protest near the rear gate of the Vidhan Bhavan premises after police began taking away Deshmukh.

Supporters of MLAs Jitendra Awhad, Gopichand Padalkar clash in Maharashtra legislature premises

On Thursday, a clash broke out inside the Vidhan Bhavan premises on Thursday evening as supporters of Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Jitendra Awhad and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Gopichand Padalkar reportedly assaulted each other.

Security personnel intervened and stopped the clash between the two groups. The issue was immediately brought to the notice of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, who has ordered an inquiry into the incident and assured that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.

The incident comes a day after both the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) had a heated argument outside the Vidhan Bhavan gates, allegedly after Padalkar slammed his car door on Awhad.

Following the incident, Awhad, along with senior NCP (SP) MLA Jayant Patil and Nitin Deshmukh — one of Awhad's supporters involved in the clash — met with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Vidhan Bhavan.
