Where Mumbai goes, its satellite cities must follow, it seems. Even as cases in Mumbai see a rise, Navi Mumbai and Panvel too reflect the same trend.

In the last 20 days, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) have seen an exponential growth in COVID-19 cases. The active cases in NMMC area have grown almost by 27 per cent, whereas in PMC the growth is a whopping 62 per cent. The daily cases in both corporations have doubled within 20 days. The good news is that the mortality rate has remained unaffected despite growth in cases.

By Saturday, the number of active cases had crossed the 1,000 mark, reaching 1,018. Meanwhile in PMC, the numbers rose from 250 to 407 in the same duration.

NMMC chief Abhijeet Bangar has advised caution. “Everyone should ask themselves if they are taking necessary steps. If people stop taking precautions, our journey will be reversed and we will have to enforce strict rules again.”

A PMC health department official on condition of anonymity, added, “There is lethargy among the citizens now and the results are for everyone to see.”
