While doctors at the state-run JJ Hospital have stuck to their stand that Mukerjea suffered from an overdose of the chemical benzodiazepine, Dr Prakash Wakode, joint director (medical education), Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), is not so sure.
Dr Wakode has sought an additional week to submit his inquiry report into the incident. Earlier this month, state Medical Education Minister Vinod Tawde had directed Dr Wakode to conduct a probe into the episode.
While the doctors at JJ Hospital, who treated Mukerjea have stuck to the overdose theory, Inspector General of Prison (South region) Bipin Kumar Singh&rsquo;s report to the home department has cited &ldquo;weakness&rdquo; as the reason for Mukerjea&rsquo;s collapse.
Speaking to SUNDAY mid-day from Nagpur, Dr Wakode, said, &ldquo;I am still in the process of collecting evidence and have intimated the government, seeking extension of time, as the inquiry, could not be completed in three days. I may seek the jail papers, including statements of jail staff, before concluding my final findings. I will be in Mumbai tomorrow and will submit my report next week.&rdquo;

Dr TP Lahane, dean of JJ Hospital, said, &ldquo;We have submitted CCTV footage from 30 minutes before she was brought in to 30 minutes after she was discharged, along with photocopies of the case papers, test reports, treatment charts followed in the jail before she was admitted to the hospital and the statement of the doctors on duty, as requested by Dr Wakode.&rdquo;
