<img style="float: left;" src="http://images.mid-day.com/images/2014/sep/Road.jpg" alt="" width="80" />After mid-day published a report on how the Public Works Department&rsquo;s (PWD) expenditure of Rs 50 lakh on &lsquo;repairing&rsquo; roads and improving their quality had been washed away by a few spells of rains, the department has now set out on a face-saving exercise to fix the potholes, albeit temporarily.

This paper had, on July 18, highlighted the shoddy quality of repair work by the department, due to which commuters were getting a rough ride every day &mdash; apart from having to suffer in kilometre-long traffic jams as a result of the craters. The highway had been damaged at regular intervals between Dahisar and Bandra.
Now, the department has started temporary repair work on the potholes. PWD Executive Engineer B B Lohar said, &ldquo;We have already started temporary repair work of the potholes wherever they have occurred on the highway.

We have a 24/7 vehicle with labourers and material, which travels along the highway and fills up potholes. More than half of the potholes have been repaired and the remaining will be taken care of soon, so that motorists don&rsquo;t have to face a problem.&rdquo;

On Thursday, we travelled along the WEH between Borivli and Bandra and found that, at many places, potholes were still present. In some areas, they have been temporarily dealt with using paver blocks and, wherever possible, a layer of tar.
