After a long delay, the repair work of cages has finally been completed and the temporary rescue centre for injured birds and animals at Karnala Bird Sanctuary was inaugurated by the Forest Department. With no rehab centres in the city, the sanctuary would now act as a recuperating place for injured birds, animals and reptiles rescued by forest officials.

Shortly after the centre was opened, authorities kept an injured turtle with two-dozen fishes in a small pond, along with a fresh water turtle for company. More turtles are expected to be shifted with other fishes, after officials get an idea how well the reptile adjusts there.

In addition, 12 injured black kites have been moved from Thane Society and Prevention of Cruelty Animals (TSPCA) hospital to the repaired cages in the sanctuary, till they are fit to fly. The recovering kites would be examined regularly by veterinarian doctors and as soon as they are deemed fit, they would be released back into the wild.
The sanctuary was selected as a temporary set-up for birds and animals that are recovering and do not require critical attention or treatment. This would allow TSPCA to make space for critical cases of injured birds in their hospital.
&ldquo;The centre was inaugurated by Local MLA, Vivek Patil, in the presence of Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Suresh Thorat and Chief Conservative (CF) Of Thane Forest Department, Ahmed Anwar, along with the TSPCA and Resqink Association of Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) team.
The teams have provided guidelines to forest officials how to take care of the birds and animals and would be following up closely about their upkeep for the next 2-3 months,&rdquo; informed Debashish Majumdar, vice president of TSPCA. Majumdar added that they were also discussing about getting a rehabilitation centre for Star Tortoise. &ldquo;Suresh Thorat has principally agreed to go ahead with the plan after we submit a project report, which would be done soon.&rdquo;
