Amid resentment by retailers, traders and citizens at the strict curbs and weekend lockdowns imposed till April 30, Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis has urged Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to revise the restrictions in consultation with the aggrieved stakeholders.

Fadnavis wrote to Thackeray on Tuesday, telling him that the curbs on weekdays were akin to a blanket lockdown. “We had consented for a weekend lockdown but the curbs on weekdays are also like a lockdown. I believe the government did not think of all sectors before imposing harsh restrictions. People and traders are upset. At many places, traders have taken to the streets to protest,” he wrote further. The Opposition and traders raised their voices on Tuesday, a day after the government amended its previous order.

Retailers, small shop owners, small eateries and barbershops should have been given a serious thought before telling them to shut the business, said the BJP leader. “The sectors that supplement each other have been issued adverse orders. For example, transportation is allowed, but the garages and spare parts shops have been shut. There are many such examples,” said Fadnavis.

He suggested that Thackeray interact with all stakeholders and revise decisions to keep livelihoods and the economy unaffected. “Stopping the pandemic is paramount, but the man-made reasons shouldn’t impact the very existence of the people. Urgent steps need to be taken,” said the ex-CM.
