Peter Mukerjea, who is said to have given a thumbs-up to a neighbour who recently asked him, ‘How are you’, has left behind wary Worli residents

With Peter Mukerjea’s Thursday arrest, Marlow, the building where he resided with wife and co-accused in the Sheena Bora murder, Indrani, would have gained sufficient fame, we thought. Ignorance is bliss, though, we realised on a Friday afternoon visit to the tony neighbourhood of Worli where the apartment block stands. We inquired about Marlow’s location with a policeman sipping tea outside. With furrowed brow, he asked, “Manoj? I don’t know where that is.”

Not everyone was clueless.

A watchman on duty at Shubhada, a building beside Marlow, smiled, showing us the way. “It’s become the most famous building here,” he mumbled to a colleague on the way.

The most famous, certainly, and now the one with the tightest security along that stretch. Nobody around was willingly agreeing to discuss the Mukerjeas. One lady reluctantly said, “Peter has been spotted at Breach Candy Club, having tea with his son.” That, we found odd, considering it’s his son, Rahul Mukerjea’s recorded phone conversations that among other evidence helped the CBI nail Peter. Another woman shared that Peter, who lived on the terrace flat, was spotted outside recently. Somebody from a neighbouring flat asked him, “Hey, how are you doing?” He is reported to have given a thumbs-up, with both thumbs, she laughed incredulously.

Another neighbour reported having seen furniture being moved from the home and piled on the ground floor. This of course, stoked rumours of Peter shifting out. Later, it was revealed, he was only getting the home painted. Roopkumar Rathod, famous playback singer, music director and tabla player, who occupies the ground floor in the same building, was unfortunately out of town and unavailable for comment.

All seemed quiet on the Worli front yesterday, which we guess is just the way Marlow wants it.
