Two Unidentified people shot at a prominent leader of the Shiv Sena in Badlapur in Thane district. The victim, Mohan Raut, died on his way to hospital.

Raut was the vice-president of the party&rsquo;s Badlapur unit. Around 9.45 am yesterday, Raut reached his office in the Surya Nagar area of Badlapur. Raut&rsquo;s driver had gone to order tea for him, and his bodyguard was on his way to the office. when two unidentified men entered Raut&rsquo;s cabin and fired five bullets, that hit him in the chest and stomach.

&ldquo;He was immediately rushed to the nearby Dhanvantri Hospital, where authorities asked for him to be shifted to AIIMS Hospital in Dombivli. He was declared dead on arrival at the latter hospital,&rdquo; said a Crime Branch officer from Ulhasnagar.
Key man The 48-year-old was an influential politician in the area, and had managed to get his wife and sister-in-law elected as corporators. He had campaigned to get BJP&rsquo;s Kapil Patil elected from the Bhiwandi constituency. Sources said Raut and local NCP leaders had often locked horns, and had filed cases against each other.
&ldquo;There were no CCTV cameras installed in the area and nobody has seen the shooters, who probably came on a bike. Nearby residents and shopkeepers felt something was wrong and rushed to Raut&rsquo;s office. They found him lying in a pool of blood there,&rdquo; added the police officer.
It is said that Raut had already informed the Thane police commissioner about a possible threat to his life. He had then hired a private bodyguard, who wasn&rsquo;t there at the time of the attack.
Raut&rsquo;s family members alleged that he had submitted his pistol to the police during the elections. &ldquo;If he would have had the pistol on him, perhaps, he could have protected himself,&rdquo; a family member said.
Reacting to the murder, the Shiv Sena called a bandh in the area and downed shutters of shops.
