Ahmedabad police filed FIR against university's registrar in Mumbai after a student was allegedly asked to pay Rs 20,000 for a fresh mark sheet that proclaimed her as having passed her exams in 2009u00a0 u00a0 After around two years, the Ahmedabad police have registered an FIR against the registrar of Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey (SNDT) Women's University, Mumbai in an alleged fraud mark sheet case. The complaint was registered by a B Ed student from SNDT inu00a0 Mani Nagar police station, Ahmedabad in 2009. <table style="width: 136px; height: 42px" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="136" align="right" border="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td><img alt="" src="/imagedata/2011/sep/sndt.jpg" border="0" /></td></tr></tbody></table>The registrar, Dr Madhu Madan (in pic), along with Head of Department of the university's campus in Ahmedabad, Dr Soudamini Menon, was booked last month on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust. According to Mani Nagar police, Lakhiben Galabhai Chela, a resident of Vyawar, Junagarh had taken admission in B Ed at the Ahmedabad campus in 2008. Chela who had done fairly well in her exams, was shocked to learn that the authorities had issued her a marksheet that proclaimed her as having failed her exam. When the student confronted Menon, she demanded Rs 20,000 to upgrade her marks and issue her a fresh mark sheet. "As per the complaint, when Chela threatened to inform the police, the authorities allegedly increased her grades and issued her a fresh mark sheet. The girl, however, went ahead and filed a case against the SNDT authorities, in the Ahmedabad Sessions Court," an officer from Mani Nagar police station said, requesting anonymity. Following the case filed by Chela, after one and a half years of hearings, the court ordered the local police to register the FIR and file a detailed report. Confirming the development, Sub-inspector NB Solanki of Mani Nagar police station said, "We have registered an FIR against Dr Madan and Dr Menon under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) of the Indian Penal Code." The basis of the FIR is that two mark sheets were issued to the same student, out of line with the established procedure. As Menon came to know about the FIR, she approached the court and took an anticipatory bail. Dr Menon gave a statement to the police, claiming that she has no role to play in the allotment of marks. She disclosed that the bungling of the mark sheets could have been done by the registrar, Dr Madan. "The court has granted anticipatory bail to my client, Dr Menon. However, the High Court has refused to quash the FIR, and directed agencies to carry out the investigation," said Dr Sonia Hurra, Menon's lawyer. The other side After repeated attempts, when Dr Madhu Madan finally answered a call from MiD DAY, she said, "I am out of Mumbai. I am in a very noisy place and cannot answer your questions." She did not reply to our text message asking for a comment on the matter.
