The maximum temperature dropped by 2 degrees Celsius on Tuesday after reaching close to 40 degrees Celsius on Monday. While the Santacruz observatory recorded 37.5 degrees Celsius, Colaba saw 34.8 degrees Celsius.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted a heatwave for three days for the city when the maximum temperature in the coastal parts had reached 37 degrees Celsius and deviated at least 4.5 degrees than normal.

Higher than normal

On Monday, the temperature soared to 39.6 degrees Celsius, six degrees higher than normal. However, on Tuesday, the temperatures fell by 2 degrees Celsius.

There are at least five instances in the past decade where day temperature had crossed 40 degrees Celsius in March. The highest recorded temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius was on March 28, 1956.

Hot air from the sea

The northwesterly dry and hot air was delaying winds from the sea. Even the sky was clear, due to which, the temperatures were soaring, an IMD official had said.
