According to Thane railway police, Rekha had refused to marry Baban as he was jobless. Baban and Rekha were in relationship for three years.

"They met at Chintamani gardens in Thane in the afternoon to discuss marriage. Baban, apparently. had already planned to kill his girlfriend and later commit suicide if sheu00a0 denied his proposal. On the pretext of dropping her home, he accompanied her and stabbed her," Shivaji Dhumal, investgating officer, Thane railway police, said.

Baban was held by constables before he could commit suicide. "A few constables saw this and immediately arrested him. But before we could admit her to hospital she succumbed to her injuries," added Dhumal.

Rekha's body has been taken to Thane civil hospital for post mortem.
