Additional Metropolitan Commissioner and Project In-Charge Vikram Kumar inspects the Atal Setu after reports of surface distress.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has directed Daewoo–Tata Infrastructure Projects to resurface a two-kilometre stretch of the 22-km Atal Setu, citing minor surface distress observed on the Navi Mumbai–bound carriageway.

The issue was spotted during an inspection carried out on Friday by Additional Metropolitan Commissioner and Project In-Charge Vikram Kumar, under the guidance of MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee.

Officials said the distress, between 14 and 16 km, was caused by monsoon weather extremes and continuous traffic flow.

The contractor has been given a strict five-day deadline to complete the resurfacing. MMRDA warned that further action would be taken if the work is not completed within the stipulated timeframe.

As part of enforcement measures, the contractor has been fined Rs 1 crore, and the defect liability period (DLP), originally set to end in January 2026, has been extended by one year. The authority also announced that the entire stretch will be permanently rebuilt after the monsoon, using dense bituminous macadam (DBM) and asphalt concrete (AC) at the contractor’s cost.

MMRDA reiterated that the Atal Setu remains structurally sound and safe and assured commuters of strict monitoring and prompt action to maintain the quality and reliability of the landmark project.
