A 27-year-old accused in Taloja jail committed suicide in the toilet of the prison yesterday. The accused, identified as Pankaj Singh, had several cases registered against him at different police stations across the city.

According to police officials, the Matunga police arrested Singh with his associate Shubankar Yadav on January 1, under sections of kidnapping and robbery. On January 13, he was sent to Taloja jail. An official from the Kharghar police station said, “Singh committed suicide around 4.30 am by using a shawl to hang himself.

The construction workers had left behind an iron rod, which he used to suspend the shawl on. We got a call and dispatched a team to the spot. We also recovered a suicide note in which he has made many allegations against the Matunga police.”

The officer further added, “Singh and Yadav were involved in many cases and were previously booked by Rabale police officials under sections of the Arms Act.” Kharghar police have now registered the death as an Accidental Death Report.

Another death
Meanwhile, Jaffar Mohammad Kalandar, an accused in a robbery case, died in Arthur Road jail on Wednesday morning after suffering a heart attack. However, his family members allege that the Shivaji Nagar police had beaten him mercilessly, causing his death.
