A group of young students from Euro School in Thane have brought laurels to the country, by becoming the only school in Asia to have their song featured in a German music album, Eine Welt (One World), themed around peace and harmony.
Their song titled, Ich Bin Ich (I Am Me), was one among the 400-odd entries submitted from across the globe, as part of a German music contest. A total of 23 songs made it to the final album, which is slated to be released later this year.
The Thane students were shortlisted after a rigorous selection process, which included two workshops and a recording session in Germany's capital city Berlin. Authorities at Euro School decided to participate in the contest after their German teacher Pryangu Savla stumbled upon a German newsletter that announced the initiative last year.
The competition, Dein Song Fuer Eine Welt -- open to those between the age groups of 10 and 25 years -- sought original songs themed around global development issues like racial discrimination and gender inequality. "We knew it would be a great learning opportunity for our students," said Savla.
The Thane school, which has been running the German language programme for over eight years, also has an active music centre. "We had to send our first entry in July 2017. Composing and recording the song required a lot of work. We were not completely ready for it. But, we tried to enjoy the experience," said Savla.
Soon after the song was sent, the school received an email, stating that it had been shortlisted. "We were then invited to Berlin to attended two workshops and the songs were re-recorded. We weren't expecting to make the cut, so it came as a surprise," added elated Savla.
Lead singer of the band, Urvi Thakur Desai said, "I kept pinching myself, because I could not believe all this was for real. Representing our school and India at an international level and actually recording a song in Germany, made us all feel very proud. I will cherish this forever."
Principal Rajani Pattabhiraman said, "Participating and winning the contest as the only Asian team is a reflection of our school's philosophy of encouraging the right mix of academic learning and co-curricular development."
