Three children from Dharavi &mdash; Bharat Sandita, 15, Rohit Yadav, 16, and Anup Yadav, 15 &mdash; drowned in the sea off Dadar Chowpatty on Saturday morning at around 11.30 am. The boys &mdash; all students of Unal Mill High School in Mahim &mdash; had, according to police, gone to play kabaddi near the beach along other classmates.
Police said that while they were all playing, Bharat entered the waters to wash the sand off his body. However, a large wave pulled him in. Anup and Rohit, who are brothers, rushed to help Bharat but also got caught in the wave.
An adult who was standing around jumped into the water to save the three, also got stuck in the high current waves. Fire Brigade personnel which had reached the spot and the adult was pulled out of the water at around 2pm using a floating tube and rope. Later, the three kids were also pulled out. They were first rushed to Bhabha hospital in Bandra and then Sion hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.
Bharat's uncle Anil Sandita, 41, said the boy was the youngest of four siblings. "Two years ago, their father had died. This is an unbearable shock for our family and especially for his mother." Anil added that following his father's death Bharat helped bring in income for the family. "Usually he'd go to work after school. Since Saturdays are a half day, he had some time off and hence, decided to go out with classmates to Chowpatty." Bharat's mother, Rukmani, traumatised by her son's death, refused to speak.
Jai Prakash Yadav who lost his sons, Rohit and Anup, was also not in a condition to speak.
Deputy Commissioner of police zone V Rajiv Jain said Mahim police have registered three accidental death reports (ADRs) in the case.
