At least three people were injured after a test-drive car lost control, hit parked vehicles and fell into a construction pit in Thane district of Maharashtra on Tuesday evening, officials said.

The accident took place at around 7.28 pm near a hotel in the Pachpakhadi area of Naupada, according to the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).

Officials said that a test-drive vehicle went out of control while being driven on the road. The car first hit an auto-rickshaw and two parked two-wheelers before plunging into a construction pit about 20 feet deep that had been dug for a building project.

Three people travelling in the car were trapped inside the vehicle after it fell into the pit.

Local residents quickly stepped in and rescued the occupants before emergency teams arrived at the scene, reported the PTI.

All three passengers suffered injuries and were taken for medical treatment, officials said.

One of the injured persons was an employee of the automobile showroom from where the car had been taken for the test drive, officials said.

Airbags help prevent serious injuries

According to the PTI, the officials said that the airbags deployed during the crash, which helped reduce the impact and likely prevented more serious injuries to the passengers.

Further details about the incident are being investigated.

Car catches fire during test drive in Thane

In an another incident last month, a test-drive car had caught fire near the Hiranandani Estate, Patlipada, along Ghodbunder Road in Thane (West).

According to the Thane Municipal Corporation's Disaster Management Cell, the alert was received at approximately 12:38 PM from a local informant. The incident involved a vehicle which caught fire while it was being taken for a test drive in the area.

The vehicle was being driven by a company employee. At the time of the incident, two customers were also inside the car. As soon as the fire broke out, all three occupants quickly exited the vehicle, ensuring their safety.

Officials had stated that no injuries were reported in the incident, averting what could have been a serious mishap.

Following the alert, personnel from Kasarvadavali Police, the Disaster Management Cell, and the Fire Brigade rushed to the scene. The response teams included one pickup vehicle from the disaster management unit and a rescue vehicle from the fire brigade.

With coordinated efforts from emergency responders and assistance from local residents, the fire was brought under control in a timely manner.

The blaze had caused extensive damage to the vehicle, completely gutting it before being fully extinguished.
