While most Std X students are preparing for their Secondary School Certificate (SSC) board exams starting today, a bright spark by the name of Dakshesh Mistry, a resident of Borivli who studies at JB Khot, may not be able to appear for the exams.

Dakshesh (16) met with an accident when a car rammed into him while he was standing by the roadside drinking juice. The mishap left him with traumatic spinal injury and vertebral fracture because of which he cannot sit upright or move both his legs (traumatic paraplegia). Doctors say he will be bedridden for 8-9 months.
Around 9.30 pm on February 14, Dakshesh stepped out of his house after dinner to take a break from studies. While he was drinking juice at a stall, a black Innova with tinted glasses dashed into him, throwing him five feet up into the air. Dakshesh&rsquo;s elder brother, Ankit, who was in a nearby lane, came rushing and took him home in an auto.
Ankit said, &ldquo;After I brought Dakshesh home, he walked from ground floor till our first-floor house, but by the time we took him to Suvarna Hospital, he had stopped feeling his legs.
The doctors advised us to rush him to a big hospital.&rdquo; Dakshesh&rsquo;s father Haresh, a marketing executive, said, &ldquo;Taking him to any civic-run hospital would be risking his life, so I rushed him to Kokilaben Hospital. Doctors advised us to got for a spinal operation.
He had been paralysed below the waist due to damage to a nerve in the spinal cord. He initially could not sense even his urine and stool, but after surgery he slowly began to sense. We filed a police complaint on February 16. Dakshes&rsquo;s operation was done on February 19.&rdquo;
Dakshesh was discharged from hospital last Friday, after doctors fixed a plate and rod with six screws in his spine. The day after, he celebrated his birthday at home. His family has retained the hall ticket so he is not marked fail in the result.
