Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar has made a strong pitch for promoting Marathi content on global streaming platforms.

Shelar, during the LA Waves Summit organised by the US-India Business Council (USIBC) at the Netflix headquarters, urged to provide space for Marathi content on platform.

In a post on X, Shelar wrote, "While interacting with representatives from various fields at the LA Waves Summit organised at Netflix headquarters, I urged the American entertainment industry to take advantage of Maharashtra’s growing media and content capabilities. On this occasion, I specifically requested Netflix to provide space for Marathi content on their platform. Every Indian language has its own heritage, and it is a unique story worth telling the world. I felt immense joy in celebrating Marathi art, language, and talent on this global platform."

Speaking to representatives from various sectors of the entertainment industry, Ashish Shelar encouraged American media companies to explore and invest in Maharashtra’s growing media and content creation ecosystem.

He specifically requested Netflix to provide space for Marathi content on its platform, highlighting the rich cultural legacy and storytelling tradition of Indian regional languages.

“Each Indian language has its own heritage and unique stories to share with the world,” Shelar wrote on X.

He further wrote, "I suggested that by directly partnering with our local Marathi creators, producers, directors, and artists, high-quality and globally appealing Marathi content can be created for a worldwide audience through this medium. He also suggested that Netflix collaborate directly with local Marathi creators, producers, directors, and artists to develop high-quality, globally appealing content for international audiences."

Shelar state that such partnerships could help showcase regional creativity while also giving global visibility to Maharashtra’s creative talent.

Play Marathi devotional songs on private radio stations: Ashish Shelar

In May, Shelar had asked the radio stations to play Marathi devotional songs.

Ashish Shelar had urged the private radio stations on Wednesday to regularly broadcast classic Marathi devotional and emotional songs, saying they continue to hold a strong emotional connection with listeners.

"The Marathi emotional and devotional songs from the gramophone and cassette era still rule the hearts of Marathi listeners. These songs should be broadcast regularly on private radio stations," Shelar had told representatives of private radio channels at Mantralaya.

He had said that the state government aims to strengthen the use of Marathi through radio and strengthen coordination between the state and the private radio sector.
