A woman lost her life after a chunk of plaster allegedly detached and fell from a ceiling in her home and struck her head. The incident occurred around 3 pm on Monday, in flat 335 of Pooja Apartments, located in the Gopcharpada area of Virar. Civic officials confirmed that a chunk of plaster, measuring approximately 4 feet x 4 feet, broke off from the ceiling and fell directly onto the woman, leading to fatal injuries.

The deceased — Lakshmi Raju Singh, 31 — was sleeping inside the room with her two children at the time of the incident. Fire brigade personnel from the Vasai-Virar City Municipal Corporation (VVCMC) promptly reached the spot after being alerted, recovered Singh’s body and rescued the children, who miraculously were unhurt.

According to sources, the building is over 30 years old, and the incident raised concerns about its structural safety. Residents have demanded immediate inspection and action by municipal authorities to survey other ageing buildings in the area to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Speaking with mid-day, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, VVCMC, Gleeson Gonsalves said, “Although the building does not look in such a bad condition from outside, a notice for structural audit was issued on May 20. However, we have received no response from the building management or occupants. We will conduct a structural audit of the building today.”

According to Gonsalves, the VVCMC has issued notices for structural audits to around 83 buildings this year. “Of these, six buildings fall into the extremely dangerous category. We have already served evacuation notices to residents of these buildings,” he said. Gonsalves also warned that strict legal action would be taken against the management/residents of buildings that fail to submit their structural audit reports, as required by law.
