The Western Railway conducted awareness campaign in schools, colleges and panchayats across all six divisions to observe International Level crossing Awareness Day on Wednesday.

The exercises is part of 'Rail Passenger and Customer Facilitation Fortnight' being observed all over the country from May 26 to June 9, 2015, a statement issued by WR said.

This year's 'International Level Crossing Awareness Day' theme is 'Act safely at level crossings'. "We are conducting this campaign at unmanned railway level crossings, where drivers are being sensitised to take necessary precautions while crossing an unmanned railway gate," Chief PRO of WR Sharat Chandrayan said.

He said, in addition to the reach out campaign, advertisements in leading local and vernacular dailies are being published and the same is also done through radio medium. Handbills, pamphlets, caps, steering, posters with awareness slogans are also being distributed at schools.

WR has also undertaken a SMS campaign under which over 50 lakh SMSes are being sent to passengers from June 1-5. Special checks/safety drives at level crossings are being conducted, he added.

Meanwhile, Central Railway has also undertaken a similar SMS campaign from June 1- 5 where it is sending out nearly 60 lakh SMSes to passengers, using Unmanned Level Crossings in accident-prone zones.

Level Crossing Awareness Web Banners have also been put on Western Railway's Facebook page and Twitter handle to create awareness in this regard, the release added.
